Housing Adaptations

Funding from local authorities

If you are considering making adaptations to your house to make it more suitable for your child's needs, you may wish to consider applying for a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) from your local council. If your child is under 19, the grant is not means-tested. It is up to the value of £30,000 (in England), £36,000 (in Wales) or £35,000 (in Northern Ireland). In Scotland, there is an equivalent scheme called the Scheme of Assistance, which can cover 80-100% of approved costs for an adaptation. This grant is administered differently, with different requirements and application processes in England, Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland.
