SOFT UK - Who We Are

SOFT UK Volunteers

Elizabeth Kirby

I’m 36 married and live in the North West in Lancashire. I’m mum to Gerard Kirby who was born 26/09/2019 and he was diagnosed two weeks after birth with full T18 and was a twin pregnancy. You can read our family story on the website.

I’m a full time mum of three and I’m very dedicated to work alongside the SOFT UK family.

Lydia Bown

I have been a voluntary writer for SOFT UK since 2021. I work as a Medical Writer and I love writing for SOFT UK. I work with SOFT UK to listen to families' stories and communicate them to people who may have a child with a suspected genetic condition or to people in a similar circumstance. These stories are extremely important to let people know that they are not alone and that they have an immense support network behind them.

Christopher O’ Toole

I am supporting SOFT UK from the USA where I have lived since 1989, although I was born and brought up in the UK. I have worked in medical communications and education, patient advocacy and collaborated with healthcare providers for over two decades. Partnering with medical professionals and non-professional caregivers has shown me how communications, awareness and support can be most effective. That became personal in 1991 when our daughter Maria was born with Trisomy 13. Maria lived for six days and is still very much a part of our family. I hope to use these experiences to assist SOFT UK in its interactions with all involved in caring for those affected by Trisomy.

My younger sister, Charlotte had Edward's Syndrome. My mum, Laura, has been a trustee with SOFT for a few years now. I was inspired to join the team, after seeing the positive impact SOFT has had not only on my family but on me as well. I really want to make a difference, and this seemed like a great way to do so. I'm currently studying healthcare at college with hopes to start studying adult nursing in September next 2023.
